Garden Pond Animals

There are many types of aquatic biotopes. These are tropical fresh water, cold fresh water, brackish water, and salt water ponds. Each of these diverse types of water niches host specific types of plants, and temperatures. Each niche must remain a constant temperature range which can happen with a water chiller.

Pond (freshwater mostly, some brackish) fish come in a variety of shapes and colors. The most common fish to keep in a garden pond are Koi fish, and Goldfish. Koi are referred to as the “kings” of the pond. This is due to their large size, and compatibility with other pond fish, like goldfish. There are many different types of Koi based upon color and size which varies from specie to specie. Some varieties include Butterfly Koi, Platinum Koi, and Yamabuki Koi, to name a few. Most Koi fish can live in freshwater conditions, with temperatures ranging from 36°F-90°F. This variety in temperature allows for them to survive in adaptable situations.

Shubunkin and Sarasa Coment can survive a wide range of water temperatures like Koi. Both types of fish have peaceful temperaments and can be released around other pond fish. The other types of fish can only survive in water conditions that are kept at 65°F -78°F.  Flagfish are the only semi-aggressive fish that may have trouble with others
